What Is Sciatic Nerve?
The sciatic nerve is the largest single nerve in the body.
The sciatic nerve is what controls the muscles of our lower leg and the back of our knees. It is also what gives sensation to the back of our thigh, our lower leg and the sole of our foot.
It begins in the lower back where it joins with several "branches" of nerves, forming one large nerve that runs all the way down through your buttocks to your feet.
What Is Sciatic Nerve Pain?
When certain nerves become pinched in the lower spine running along the sciatic nerve which is the largest single nerve in the human body, intense pain can develop that runs the entire length of the legs.
This is called Sciatica. Sciatic nerve pain is usually repetitive, felt primarily in one leg and can be described as "intolerable" by most people who experience it (something like a very bad toothache!).
If you've ever experienced sciatica, then you know how painful it can be. The pain can become so terrible that you find it difficult to get out of bed, you are unable to walk, and moving becomes torture. I felt terrible. And I just wanted to get rid of the pain, to get my life back.
I decided to take matters into my own hands… figuring out what are the causes.
Sciatica Pain Causes
Each case come with a different reason behind the sciatica pain. But for the most part, it’s pretty easy to understand what causes this pain in the first place.
The primary cause for a lot of people is the lumbar herniated disc. This appears when the soft inner material of the disc starts to leak out, or herniates, through the fibrous outer core and irritates or pinches the contiguous nerve root and this ends up damaging our spinal cord.
That’s when the sciatica pain comes.
Degenerative disc disease can be one of the causes too. While some level of disc degeneration is a natural process that occurs with aging, for some people one or more degenerated discs in the lower back can also irritate a nerve root and cause sciatica. Isthmic spondylolisthesis can appear when some small stress fracture allow the vertebral body to slip forward.
Some of the other causes may even include the lumbar spinal stenosis or the piriformis syndrome.
Spinal stenosis occurs when the spinal canal or intervertebral foramen becomes narrower. There are two types of this condition: central canal stenosis and neuroforaminal stenosis.

There are additional causes of the injury not necessarily belonging to the high-impact variety that is inducing sciatic nerve pain.
Aging: As people age, the muscles of the back become weaker and the bones become less dense and more brittle due to calcium metabolic problems. The spine also tends to weaken and misalign under the years of constant toil and work that many of the aged are well accustomed to. When this happens, disc denegeration can occur resulting in a condition known as a herniated disc. This can cause sciatic nerve pain when the disc itself becomes damaged and hits a surrounding nerve, or the gel inside the disc leaks out and protrudes on that same nerve.
Ergonomic issues in the workplace: A growing percentage of people working in the corporate environment are now being diagnosed with herniated discs as one of the biggest causes of sciatic nerve pain. This happens because sitting in front of a computer for hours also puts undue stress on the spine and back muscles. Even if sitting posture is good, this does not guarantee the full health of the back. Prolonged hours on a badly designed chair can still initiate herniated disc problems. The most susceptible workers are those who do not take micro-breaks to alleviate the stresses on their back, and those who do not exercise routinely as a means of relieving the pressure on the spine.
Bad posture: Posture is critical to the health of the back and the spine. Improper posture places undue stress on the spine eventually causing it to give way to a number of various back problems. Bad posture equally applies to sitting down, standing up, walking, or even running. One thing that anyone can do to help prevent back problems, including sciatic back pain, is to have good posture.

What stretches should we focus on?
• Standing Hamstring Stretch
• Sitting Spinal Stretch
• Knee to Opposite Shoulder
• Sitting Pigeon Pose
The best thing about these stretches is that you can do them with ease. Sure, they can feel a bit complicated at first. But they offer you a way to adjust your spinal cord adequately and without a lot of pain. When you deal with spinal cord problems, these can easily expand, and we want to eliminate all those potential issues as fast as you can. It’s not going to be easy to do such a thing, so taking care of everything and adjusting things will be a primary focus here. It’s definitely worth the effort, so you should totally give these stretches a shot.
Any stretch that can help you externally rotate the hip will provide relief. The best thing you can do is to try out some new stuff all the time. New stretches or a combination of different stretches you already used can come in handy. It will bring in front some unique benefits and enjoyable moments that you will rely upon. It’s a good option and one that can do wonders in the long term. Just consider giving various stretches a try, and you will not be disappointed.
Stretches can provide a quick relief too. These will end up helping you more than anything when you have sciatica pain. Sciatica hip pain can last for weeks and cause excruciating pain to the point that it can rob us of our daily activities. From the time we are infants, we depend on our hips to move. Any damage to th adjoining sciatic nerve can hinder these movements.
The hips are not the only ones affected by pain. It can also cause pain in the legs and buttocks, as the sciatic nerve runs from the spinal cord to the feet. These are exercises I do to relieve hip pain.
Exercise 1: Lying Hip Flexion Stretch
I lie on my back with my legs extended onto the floor. Then, pull the leg of the affected hip towards my chest. Hold it for 30 seconds and return to original position. And I repeat three times.
Exercise 2: Crossover Hip Stretch
I lie on the floor with my legs extended onto the floor. And raise the leg of affected hip and put my foot on the floor on the outside of the opposite knee. (If you can’t, follow the picture) And I pull the knee of raised leg across the midline of my body with other hand or with a towel.
Once I begin to feel a stretch, I hold for 30 seconds. Then, return to original position. And I repeat three times.
Exercise 3: Piriformis Stretch
I lie on the floor with the leg of affected hip crossed over the other leg at the knee. Both legs should be bent.
Now I pull the lower knee towards the shoulder until I feel a stretch. And I hold for 30 seconds and return to original position. And I repeat three times.
Exercise 4: Lying Pigeon Pose
I get on all fours on the floor. Move the leg of the affected hip underneath my body to have the knee of this leg resting on the floor on the opposite outer side of my body. Extend the other leg straight back, keeping the pelvis straight.
Keep the affected leg in this place as you move your hips back towards the floor, leaning onto your forearms or floor depending on your flexibility. Once I feel a stretch, I hold for 30 seconds and return to the starting point on all fours. And I repeat three times.
I must confess, sciatica hip pain can turn your world upside down. The pain can be debilitating and can stop you from working and enjoying daily activities for weeks, if not months.
It all depends on the type of sciatica that we are dealing with right now. If we have acute sciatica attacks, those are short. They won’t last for more than a few minutes at a time. Yet they will come back often. The acute pattern flare-ups can appear anywhere from 2 to 6 times a year, and the entire treatment can last up to 4-5 years in total. But if we see a chiropractor or start using some of the exercises we mentioned above, it will be a lot easier for us to get the results we expect.
On the other hand, if you have chronic sciatica attacks, these will end up haunting you for a very long time. These attacks won’t ever go away without any proper treatment. And even so, treatments are not guaranteed to stop sciatica pain for a very long time. We do need to talk with a doctor or a chiropractor as fast as possible if we see any signs of sciatica. This way we will at least have some chances of curing it.
The bottom line is that sciatica never goes away completely unless you treat it early on and you stick to the treatment. It also depends on other factors, like weight, dietary habits, lifestyle, etc. It’s one of the things that will end up changing your life in ways you would not imagine. That’s why you should try out various treatments as quickly as possible.
